How Planets link to Gods in Greek mythology

By admin

Today we will discuss about the connection of planets with the Greek mythology. The Greek mythology is quite interesting to explore. The more amazing fact is that the our modern day planets were named from the Greek Culture. If are a pioneer of Greek mythology, you simply need to go up and look into the night sky. The Greek deities lived up high on Mount Olympus. The heroes of the Greek mythology were believed to be found between the patterns of stars amidst the constellations. So welcome back to 8metals.com. Happy reading!!

First let’s take a look into the constellations:

  • Pegasus: Pegasus glorifies the northern sky. It gets its name from the winged horse Pegasus born from the blood of the monstrous Medusa.
  • Centaurus: This is one of the largest constellations and was named after half-horse man Centaur. It shines brightly in the northern sky.
  • Orion: The whole world visualizes this constellation located on the cosmic equator. It’s named after Orion the Hunter who died of a scorpion sting. Perhaps he is now quite safe in the sky as Orion sets in the West as scorpion rises in the East.
  • Argo Navis: It stands high in the southern sky. It’s named after a ship that Jason and the Agronauts drove to the Colchis to steal the golden fleece. It has been segregated into three constellations namely Carina (keel or hull of the ship), Puppis (stern), and Vela (sails).

Now let’s look at the connection with the planets:

The planets were named after the Greek gods since the Romans also worshipped the same gods. The link between these two diverse mythologies is striking and that’s how the planets get their names.

  • Mercury: This is named after the fast messenger of God Hemes. It’s interesting to note that Mercury is a fast pacing planet. Thus the Greeks must be great scientists.
  • Venus: Another excellent drive of cosmic science. Venus is named after the goddess Aphrodite who is noted for her beauty. Equally Venus is the brightest planet in the sky. Can you just image the extent to cosmology?!!
  • Mars: Aries was a hot tempered god. Mars revolves as a red fiery planet. Well it seems we must get a time machine to travel back and admire the magnificent progress of Science.
  • Jupiter: Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. So the Greeks skilfully named it after Zeus who was the most powerful god. Kudos to the Cosmic science of those ages.
  • Saturn: Saturn is the second largest planet. So Keeping the strife between the largest and the second largest planet, Saturn gets its name from Cronus who was Zeus’s father. He was always engaged in a power struggle with Zeus. Quite brainy!!
  • Uranus: Uranus was Cronus’s father. Uranus was the sky god. The name remains unchanged as Uranus is of the sky colour. Another great drive of science. Their thinking patterns were quite unique.
  • Neptune: This bright blue colour planet resembles the ocean waves. It’s named after Poseidon who ruled the oceans. Thus another striking way of naming planets.
  • Pluto: It gets its name from Hades. Though presently its not longer a planet, but it’s the farthest in the solar system. Similarly Hades, the god of underworld was far away from everyone in this universe. So the naming of planets still stands unique to the Greek tradition.

Such was the extent of science, that even the modern science cannot debunk these names. So if you want to know more such mind-blowing theories, keep following us. Stay updated and we promise to be back soon. Stay safe and healthy.
