Vidur Neeti Explained:

By Nilakhi Banerjee

When we talk about the greatest philosophers of all time then we remember Chanakya, Socrates, etc but most people do not know anything about Vidur. Vidur was one of the famous philosophers of his time. He was a servant’s son and hence he didn’t become the king. But because of his intelligence, he became Prime Minister of Hastinapur. His teachings are called Vidur Neeti and his teachings are so much relevant even in today’s times. Let us study some of his teachings in detail.

Talk less and listen more:

Person with good listening skills is appreciated everywhere and the person who boasts about himself more is criticized everywhere. The same thing is being taught In every B school today. There is also an analogy that when we speak then we just repeat our knowledge but when we listen then we will get new knowledge.

Five things always give us happiness:

Getting money,

 Better health,

obedient child,

 loving wife/husband,

knowledge.

The person remains happy when he gets money for his hard work but there is no use of money if his health is not good hence his health also makes him happy. A person who has an obedient child and a loving wife also remains happy. Ultimately if we have knowledge or skill by which we can feed our family then that knowledge also brings us happiness.

If you have a bad company then you will have a miserable end:

Whenever a criminal act was done by someone and he ran away from the police then the police start interrogating his near and dear ones. Similarly, if we have friends with a bad image then our seniors build our bad image in their minds. There is also a saying that wet wood also starts burning with dry wood. Hence we must select our friends very wisely.

People who want success must remain away from these six bad habits:

Excess sleep: Successful people do not sleep every time as they have a reason to wake up and do more,

Yawning: Vidur says yawning is our greatest enemy and we must do our job very diligently,

Fear: We must be fearless in order to become successful in life as people who have fear always think about failures,

Laziness: Successful people know that they are never be lazy and whatever they have to do is to be done without any delay.

Procrastination: Successful people never think about the difficulty of doing anything and they just start working on their projects enthusiastically.

A person who is not worthy of trust must not be trusted but if we know that a person is very trustworthy then also we must not trust him freely.

As we all know that when trust is broken then it feels very bad hence we must never trust blindly on anyone. There is also a very famous film of Shahrukh Khan where his father trusts blindly on his trustworthy business partner and went for a foreign trip. When he returned from his trip then he found that all of his fortunes were taken over by his business partner. Ultimately his father becomes so much frustrated that he takes the ultimate step of taking his own life by sui

r Neeti was written five thousand years ago but it is so much relevant even today and if we see then we will find that many famous authors also focussed on the above-mentioned points. We will read the other five learnings in our next writing piece.

There are several popular philosophies like ChanakyaNeeti, BhishmaNeeti, ShukraNeeti and ParshuramaNiti in India. Many people do not know about Vidur and his philosophy i.e., VidurNeeti. Vidur explained his teachings in a very beautiful way in VidurNiti. VidurNiti can be found in UdyogParv of Mahabharata. After the war between Pandavas and Kauravas, Dhritarashtra discussed wrong & right and the same is written under VidurNiti. .

Enmity

A person who has enmity with powerful people and who forgets about his good friends is the greatest fool. There is also a saying that if you have enmity with someone then there are zero chances of your benefit but there are definite chances of the fact that he will harm you. We must always try to be friendly with everyone. Also many times we ignore our good friends and do not concentrate on their needs. At the end of the day, our achievements have little meaning without our near and dear ones. Hence we must also focus on our relationships.

A person who starts a new project after doing proper analysis and does not stop until it is achieved is a very wise person. Swami Vivekananda once said ” Arise, Awake and stop not till the goal is achieved. On the same line, we must also work on our projects diligently and must never procrastinate over small setbacks. Small setbacks will definitely come in our way and we have to overcome those obstacles and visualize the success. Fear is our greatest enemy and it is also the greatest misery in the world, therefore we must never fear the failure.

Goals

Our minds, talks, and actions must always point towards positivity. We must always work towards the achievement of our goal. Vidur said whatever we think will definitely come to us. If we think about our problems then we will be surrounded by problems. And if we will think about the opportunity then we will get more opportunities around. In other words, Vidur already explained about “Law of attraction” five thousand years ago. Stephen covey in one of his famous books told a story about two brothers. There were two brothers and their father used to drink alcohol daily. After drinking he used to beat his sons and wife.

Focus

After growing up one of his sons become a millionaire and the other one became alcoholic. When Covey interviewed a millionaire son and asked how he became a millionaire then he explained that since childhood that son focussed on coming out of those problems he faced during childhood. How his father used to spend all of his earnings on alcohol and survival for the whole family was a big challenge. On the other hand, another son who became drunkard explained that his life was ruined because of his father. We can clearly see the difference between two thinkings. We can also change our fortune by thinking with more optimism.

In these times when everyone is listening and reading about foreign thinkers and their philosophies, we all must read our own Indian history to understand that everything is already written here. We will come with philosophies of other Indian acharyas and leaders in subsequent writings.
